Family Style Class

Birth - 5 years: This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers—grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning.

Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience. Click to Register

Music Together Babies

The one-semester Music Together® Babies Class was created especially for families with infants under nine months old. That’s right: It’s never too early to start our music classes!Try a free class!

Maybe you’ve noticed that your baby responds when you play a song in the car or sing to soothe him. Babies are naturally musical—and you don’t have to be a great singer or dancer yourself to nurture their love of music. In this music class for babies, your Music Together teacher will show you how you can support your baby’s music development through simple and fun activities. You’ll learn lots of musical ways to connect with your little one through music, and you’ll bond with the other new parents in your class, too. Click to Register

Music Together Generations is a mixed-age music class with the sweetest twist: the addition of elder participants! In senior residential and day programs across the country, people of all ages come together to sing, dance, shake shakers, and swing scarves.

As the children’s music-learning is nurtured, families also foster new and important relationships with the senior participants, who we call “Musical Grandfriends.” Seniors look forward to the children's lively visits and the chance to share memories and stories. The additional cognitive, physical, and emotional benefits for both children and elders make the Generations class a heartwarming win-win for everyone.

You'll value bringing this class into your child's foundational years. And if you haven't had much experience with older adults, you'll love what this class does for you, too. Click to Register

Master Class

The Masters class for 3s/4s is designed to mirror some of the ways children are learning in a preschool classroom environment. The structure of a preschool classroom, and typical 'rules' that in place in a school setting, are applied to a traditional Music Together class (e.g., no running no screaming, etc. (Rules all established in a positive manner and are explained (usually by the children themselves) so that everyone understands WHY the rules are in place and students follow these agreements to the best of their ability.

We create opportunities in class for children to sing by themselves, take 'solo' turns playing with instruments, offer activity suggestions, and make up their own vocables or verses.

Children are encouraged to sing their own names during the Hello and Goodbye songs and to repeat tonal/rhythm patterns by themselves if they choose.

While a lot of the class is just what you'd expect from a mixed age group, we also include activities not always common in a mixed age setting that are age appropriate for 3- and 4-year olds.

Younger siblings are welcome to attend this class with their older sibling. Most older children are aware that 'little' kids can't follow some of the rules yet, although we are always surprised at how some of these younger siblings rise to level of the rest of the class.

How is a 3s/4s class different from a mixed age class? This class is similar in structure to a mixed-age class. However, in this family-style class the teacher may extend musical activities to include exploration in rhythm improvisation, independent singing, dance improvisation, and dramatic play. The Music Together approach has been integrated with great success into the preschool setting and we utilize our experience in that realm to inform our work in the parent/child 3s/4s classroom.

Do I attend the 3s/4s class with my child? Yes. Remember that you are still your child's most important role model, especially during this crucial stage of primary music development. Your participation and enjoyment is essential to their musical growth. The most important things you can model for your child are simply pleasure, interest, and the desire to participate in music activities!

Can my younger child attend the 3s/4s class as well? Yes, younger siblings are welcome to attend the 3s/4s class with their older brothers and sisters.

Rhythm Kids

Rhythm Kids was created and developed by musician, composer and percussionist, Tom Foote with more than ten years of in-class research with children of all ages. Tom noticed that many children stop taking music classes between the ages of 4-8 because they aged out of "Mommy & Me" classes and they weren't quite ready for private instruction. Rhythm Kids is designed to help children integrate and assimilate rhythm into their lives in a way that would keep children engaged, and actively participating in music, for as long as possible.

The djembe drum was chosen because of its ease-of-use and the ability to be used in various ways. The vision was to include activities and instrument play that would allow children to create and express themselves through music and movement, multicultural rhythm patterns (patterns based on cultural music), songs from around the world and music-based games and activities.  Most importantly, the class had to be fun, because that is important for children at this age.

Four Guiding Principles

  • Rhythm is something we carry within our speech patterns, heartbeat and day-to-day movement
  • Rhythm is a basic, fundamental musical skill that all children can learn, strengthen and develop
  • Rhythm is foundational to other disciplines and highly beneficial for further instrument study
  • Creating a culture of informal "play" allows children to flourish musically

The Voice, The Body & The Drum

Although we typically bring African djembe drums to class, Rhythm Kids is way more than just a drumming class as our main focus is to develop rhythm using the voice, the body and the instrument. Our class archetype includes activities that strengthen and draw out a child's natural sense of rhythm while they have fun learning with their friends.

About the Rhythms

Rhythm Kids is a three-year curriculum and the rhythm patterns taught in our classes are adapted from cultures all around the world including; Ghana, Puerto Rico, Morocco, Mali, Guinea, Columbia, Senegal, Nigeria and many others. The benefits of music in a child's life are long lasting and we hope our classes will bring music and happiness to your child, to your family and to your community for many, many years!
